Software Notes
From The BoxCommand your Cobra ship in a fantastic voyage of discovery and adventure, a supreme test of your combat, navigational and entrepreneurial skills.

Trade between countless planets, using the proceeds to equip your ship with heat-seeking missiles, beam lasers and other weapons – corporate states can be approached without risk, but unruly anarchies are swarming with space pirates.

Black market trading can be lucrative but could result in skirmishes with local police and a price on your head!

However you make your money, by fair means or foul, you must blast onwards through space annihilating pirates and hostile aliens as you strive to earn your reputation as one of the Elite!

Game originsThe origins of Elite can be traced back to 1983.  It was widely thought then that the idea of a space combat game (the concept behind Elite) wouldn't be possible to implement in practice at that time.  However, after some experimentation on his Acorn Atom David Braben and Ian Bell (the game creators) decided to give it a go.  Originally, more a 3D graphics environment arcade game, the addition of the trading element and missions came later in order to make it more of the adventure game they had envisioned and not just another arcade game.

The original publisher candidate demanded that Elite should have high score system and three lifes to begin with. Braben and Bell decided against that request. The finished game was first released in 1984 on the BBC Micro by Acornsoft, before being converted to practically every computer format imaginable.  It debuted on the Atari ST in 1988.

Because Acornsoft only had contract to publish the original Acorn version, the rights to publish Elite went to the highest bidder in an auction. That is why the ST–version along with others was published by British Telecom’s software label Firebird.

Version NotesUnique to the Atari ST version was that the cockpit graphic could be amended quite easily since it was nothing more than a standard ST picture file, ironically the picture file format used was Degas Elite. The screen used for congratulating the player for reaching Elite status was also in this format on the disk. Despite the capability of changing the cockpit graphic only the example below is known to exist:

The ST version of Elite includes five secret missions that must be completed before the player can obtain ELITE status. These missions are not documented in the manual that comes with the game. This has led to some confusion to exactly what the missions are in the ST version since they can be different on other platforms. Listed below are all the missions in the ST version:

Mission 1 - Destroy Constrictor
The Contrictor is an experimental spaceship with powerful shielding, it has been stolen and you have been given the task of finding and destroying it.

Mission 2 - Shuttling Documents
Top secret Thargoid documents have been captured and you are required to transport them to a navel base.

Mission 3 - Rescue Refugees
Refugees on a space station are in imminent danger from a dying sun going nova, you must get them out of there.

Mission 4 - Invisible Asp
An Asp complete with Clocking Device is terrorising innocnet traders, locate and destroy this menace.

Mission 5 - Invasion Fleet
The Thargoids have taken over a space station, you must fight against this fleet to get to the station and destroy it.

Additional Notes
Elite - The New Kind

Between 1999 – 2002 Christian Pinder developed a homebrew remake called Elite – The New Kind with a modern graphics and combat system. It was converted to run in a GEM window in 2001 by Christian Putzig for accelerated Atari ST's and other high-end Atari-machines.

Sadly David Braben asked Pinder to stop the development and distribution in 2003, so the Atari-port isn't officially available anymore.

Inspiration
Docking sequence took inspiration from the cult movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Also a role playing game Traveller featured many elements that ended up in the final version of Elite like the default Cobra pilot Commander Jameson.

Other sources for inspiration were films like Battlestar Galactica, Hitchhiker’s Guide To Galaxy and even Star Wars. Bell also got lots of ideas from books by Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Larry Niven. And then ofcourse, there was the mother of all space opera's: An original Star Raiders on Atari 8bit computers.

Game Engine
When constructing the Elite universe, Braben and Bell told the publisher there would be approximately 281.000.000.000.000 different galaxies. It was ultimately dropped when the publisher pointed out that such huge figure would make artificiality of Elite’s universe obvious and that many of the galaxies would look identical. Braben and Bell dropped the final figure to eight galaxies with 256 planets each. Still a lot to explore.

Original Elite concept took two years to complete, and the games was featured on BBC evening news after reaching a 100 000 sold copies.

Elite was one of the first games to offer “sandbox” gaming with free universe. After more than 20 years later, it is the latest big thing in modern gaming hardware.
