Software Notes
From The BoxHe's back.  He's meaner.  He's more Dangerous.

Our intrepid adventurer and all-round super-hero saved the world once once from the wicked ways of the Fat Man, leaving the overweight ogre tied to a stake and held by the Goolus.  But fortune has has smiled on Rick's enemy, and a strange alien race has befriended him.  Now the threat to the world is twice as great.  Rick's called back to action - in a Flash!

Rick Dangerous II is the ultimate platform poser, packed with puzzles and teeming with traps.  Pick up and play.  And play.  And play.

Starting in the Flying Saucer which has landed in Hyde Park, shooting off to the planet Barf with its ice kingdoms and mud mines, before finally coming face to face with Fat Man in his headquarters, Rick endures screen after screen of heart pumping action and death defying thrills.

Bigger and better than before, Rick Dangerous II is altogether rip-roaringly first rate.

DevelopmentThe development of Rick Dangerous 2 began in April 1990 with the talents of programmer Simon Phipps and graphic artist Terry Lloyd returning for Rick’s second adventure. Before any programming was done a series of concept drawing where created by Simon Phipps to test many of his ideas. It was decided from the very beginning that the basic gameplay that made the first such a success should remain intact, however, the levels would be bigger and much more devious.

Development shots from The One, Issue 22

Terry Lloyd used Art Studio’s map editor (above left) to build the backround graphics for the game. These building blocks where then assembled using a custom-written program to produce a finished level. For example, a screen from the vegetable kingdom built from these building blocks is shown (above right).

Development shot (left) from The One, Issue 22

Dave Pridmore’s custom built map editor allowed traps and triggers to be positioned at will in the game. The white shaded boxes (above left) represent the traps, while the red shaded areas represent the areas of the screen that Rick must enter to trigger the trap. These shaded areas are invisible in the actual game (above right) resulting in a daunting screen for the player.

Concept Drawing (left) from The One, Issue 22

Simon Phipps title screen artwork (above left) shows that Rick was going to dressed in white with a red cape. However, this was dropped in favour of a more striking red (above right) since white didn’t show up very well in the game.

Cover ArtworkIn the first Rick Dangerous game the main influence was Indiana Jones. The main influence for the second game was Flash Gordon but with a bit of Indiana Jones still present. For the Rick 2 the original artwork from the first game was used a a basis for a reworked version that would give a strong Flash Gordon flavour.

The artwork above took a couple of liberties to be as striking as possible. The green skined person in the artwork foreground that has more than a passing resemblance to 'Ming the Merciless'. The similarity is striking, from the headcap, to the high collar, to the beard. In the game Rick's nemesis is the 'Fat Man' and he looks nothing like this portrayl. It's puzzling as to why Ming is used in the artwork therefore! The guards in the artworks look similar to the guards in the 1980 film and almost identical to the ones in the Buster Crabbe serials of the 1930's. No character resembling these can be found anywhere in the game.

FactoidPressing the space bar while the Title Screen is displayed turns the colour off for an authentic 1950s look!

Trivia
  • The Rick Dangerous II story picks up from exactly where the original Rick Dangerous left off.  If you manage to complete Rick I without a cheat you will see the elaborate completion sequence that links neatly to the intro sequence of Rick Dangerous II.

  • According to the developers, Rick Dangerous II is based around 1940s-50s Flash Gordon with elements of Dan Dare and Forbidden Planet thrown in.

  • A rumoured sequel (Rick Dangerous III) was to cast Rick as Dick Tracey (with a touch of Bogart).  This sequel was never produced.
