| Inspiration | The Influence of Rollerball
The futuristic sport and setting for Speedball was obviously inspired by the 1975 cult classic Rollerball. The movie portrays the ultra violent scenes of Rollerball in a very similiar manner and even the costumes used are almost identical. Most noticable in the movie poster is the spiked fist. This same imagery is used to good effect when it comes bursting through a wall in the games intro sequence.
It was nothing new for a game to be inspired by a movie. The Rick Dangerous games where inspired by Indiana Jones and Flash Gordon. Even the classic Elite drew on '2001 A Space Odyssey' for certain elements in the game, the most famous probably being the Blue Danube playing when docking.
Rollerball was directed by Norman Jewison and starred James Caan and Ralph Richardson.

| Development | Although development started on the ST, dual development with the Amiga version soon followed.
