Renagade Software |
Renegade was the software house formed in 1990 by The Bitmap Brothers and the record company 'Rhythm King' after the Bros decided to leave Mirrorsoft to go it alone and publish their own creations.
The roots of this collaboration can be traced back to the creative process of Xenon 2 where the 'Bomb The Bass' track 'Megablast (Hip Hop on Precinct 13)' was wanted by the Bros as the soundtrack to accompany the frenzied on-screen action of their latest creation. This led to the initial contact and eventual linkup between the Bros and Martin Heath the boss of Rhythm King Records, a relationship that would ultimately result in the formation of 'Renegade'.
Frequently openly critical of the software industry, the Bitmap Bros wanted Renegade to be different. In their own words they wanted to 'break the culture of mediocrity' that pervaded the industry. Thus, within Renegade they aimed to create a framework that was more favourable for developers by giving them more control over what they did and rewarding them appropriately.
In 1991 Renegade would release their first game, the cutesy multi-scrolling platformer 'Magic Pockets'. This would again boast a strong Rhythm King influence as a 'Betty Boo' track (who was signed to Rhythm King Records) was used on the soundtrack. This release was followed shortly afterwards by the much praised and highly successful 'Gods'.
Renegade would continue publishing high profile titles for the ST platform for the next few years until in 1994 with the Atari ST in serious decline they finally bowed out with the release of 'Sensible Soccer v1.2 - International Edition'. This final release would mark the end of Renegade's involvement with the ST and an end to a period which saw them publish some of the very best titles the ST had to offer.
