To help minimise the problem of disk swapping/juggling, many software titles would be programmed to make use of an external floppy drive (drive B) if one was available. Essentially, this meant that when the time came to change disks, the software would check for the requested disk in BOTH the source drive and the alternate drive (e.g. if it was drive A that requested the disk then it would check both this and drive B for it and vice-versa). In theory therefore, reading of the disks would switch seamlessly from drive-to-drive (A->B and B->A) and minimize the nuisance factor associated with manually switching disks. This was no silver bullet though, as if a program spanned more than 2 disks then considerable amounts of disk swapping could still be necessary. (Note: although many programs utilised a second drive if available most would NOT boot from this in the first instance - i.e. initial loading of the program would usually require the internal drive.) |
