| 12th February 11 Guardians still alive and kicking |
10 months with seemingly no activity on the Guardians website, did we go to sleep or lose interest or something? Well, lets just say real life issues got in the way and the Guardians website was put on the back burner for a little while. However, essential work did continue behind the scenes to ensure Guardains long term survival was ensured. We will post more on this when we have finalised everything behind the scenes. For now, lets to just say its looking good, very very good!
From now on the website will be updated on a regular basis, we really hope everyone will enjoy Gurdains as we strive to catalogue and preserve the impressive software written for the Atari ST.

| 4th July 09 Graphics & Sound |
Work continues on Guardians unabated, however, we haven’t had an update on the news page for some time, so here goes. As you probably know, the ST was much more than a glorified games machine, it could turn its hand with equal success to more serious things like, graphics, sound, and business software.
The ST had some great art packages, Degas and Neochrome where the first two to appear on the ST soon after its launch in 1985 and where highly successful. HyperDraw and HyperPaint showed that art packages could be done using GEM. But the most breathtaking of all was Spectrum 512, this incredible piece of software allowed users to paint using all 512 colours of the ST on screen at once. To make this possible the authors used the ST's rapid palette switching to get around the normal 16 colour screens.

The ST was capable of capturing excellent quality sound for use in a variety of ways. To get sound into the ST you needed a little piece of hardware called a sound sampler which plugged into the cartridge or even printer slots, these then hooked up to the audio source with leads. The software that came with sampler then allowed the user to capture, edit, and apply a host of special effects to the sound. Below are some of the software that where used for capturing sound on the ST.

Music Construction Set allowed users to create music using actual musical notation sing three channels of sound. Smooth Talker allowed the ST to actually talk by the use of phonetics, whole documents could be read and there is even a facility for the program to learn difficult english words.

| 15th June 09 Compilations & Appliactions |
Something a bit different this time with some newly added compilations and applications. A good way for software companies to make more money was to dust of old games and use them as part of a compilation. There would normally be a couple of really good games with a couple of duds in the compilation, the duds being added just to make up the numbers. No doubt some customers would find them irresistible since there where bound to be games on them they wanted, with the others being an added bonus. Compilations obviously sold quite well or software houses would have stopped producing them, however, they are a lot rarer than full price or even budget games and so database like Guardians really needs to catalogue them in the same manner as any other release, or we would be neglecting a major piece of software history.

Applications are just as important to us as games, so each and every application we find for the ST will be added to Guardians. Utilities also come under this section no matter how trivial they may seem, for example you wouldn't expect us to add just clipart or fonts to our database, but if they where sold commercially the we will be adding them.

The existence of this game first came to light in 2003 when the original programmer, Stéphane Belin, was contacted by Mike Clarke a fellow ex Psygnosis member. Mike had done the music for the game was eager to know if the game still existed. He promptly posted the news on an Amiga forum that Stéphane still had the game! read more |
